So how and when do they decide which team automatically skips through to the 2nd round?
The article answers that. The team left at the end of the draw gets the bye.

Wouldn't be great to get a bye. What you'd gain in 'free' prize money you'd lose in gate receipts and potential TV cash.

And that's assuming the FA even gives the prize money to the team that gets the bye - seeing as they technically won't have achieved anything.

If you read the article it tells you they will get the prize money.

Oops, didn't see that bit. Surprisingly generous of the FA.

You get £36,000 if you get the bye . I much rather a home 1st round tie.

When you look at that, it's no wonder big clubs don't take the FA Cup that seriously any more when you consider the winners of this season's Champions League could win prize money of around £75m.

It just isn't worth their while.

That may be true but at least the FA are being pretty generous to smaller clubs. Progress through to the Third Round proper would see a League One or Two club win £90,000 and if they could get through the Third Round then they amass a total of £225,000. Add that to a decent Fourth Round home draw and it is quite a money spinner for the most successful lower league clubs. To make the competition more appealing to big clubs they would have to make a vast reduction to the money available for the early round winners.

Just a thought:

Given the ticket revenue is split 50:50 each game, the home team are always worse off financially due to them having to host the game(assuming staffing + stewarding + policing + electric + heating isn't offset by any side income - shop/kiosks etc)

(unless travel cost for the visiting team balances the above)

Therefore the home team would need a win to mop up the deficit.

Surely we would rather either a bye or a "local" away draw to a team with a "decent" following and a "decent" size away stand (Bristol/Swindon etc).

Feel free to correct my assumptions.

It is the net ticket revenue that is split 50:50 - so gate receipts minus the costs of staffing, police, stewarding etc.

So if we were at home we’d make money on food, drink and merchandising, sponsorship.. I still rather a home tie against a beatable team... financially at least.
