Was the manager when I first got taken to Argyle, and that was the promotion season.
Remember my family saying we could finish in the play-offs during the next season, but we had some poor results after the Pompey away win. That was so close to making the top flight.
Thanks Ciderman for giving me the Argyle bug.
May you rest in peace.

Oh no, very sad news. My first Argyle manager (that I was properly aware of). An absolute legend, his 85/86 team hooked me in. RIP Dave, thank you for everything.

High on the list of managerial greats at HP. Had an impressive CV too. His reputation throughout the game helped him attract a lot of good players. I've always regretted that work took me away for much of his reign. RIP

Things I didn't know about Dave Smith:

-He played 100 games for Burnley
-He was a coach at Newcastle when they won their only European trophy in 1969
-He had already achieved three promotions out of the Fourth Division prior to joining Argyle
-He was on the managerial scrapheap in between his stints at Southend and Argyle, and had to resort to selling insurance to make a living
-His spell at Dundee was a disaster and he lasted just six months
-Argyle tried to get him back in 1997

RIP Ciderman, my very first manager as an Argyle fan.
