I seem to recall a League cup match at Plough Lane v Wimbledon many moons ago. I have a vague recollection of the BBC reporter at the match being Mike Ingham and he mentioned his support for Argyle, especially as we won that night (in extra time?) It was mentioned on his radio report as we made our way back home on the travel club bus and it stuck with me whenever I used to hear him afterwards.

Mike Ingham is indeed an Argyle fan.

As I recall, the backstory is that his father was in the Royal Navy, and was posted in Plymouth for the first ten years or so of Mike's life.

So the boy attended Hyde Park Primary. Where he developed both his immaculate speaking voice (in common with so many Hyde Park alumni), and his lifelong love for Argyle.

Somewhat ironically Peter, Peter Jones was the voice of football (as well as Mike Ingham) as I was growing up, initially on radio 2 then on radio 5.

He died in 1990 and his widow resided in Newton Ferrers until she sadly passed a couple of years ago. I was glad I got the opportunity to tell her how much her husband's voice meant to me and a generation of sports fans growing up.

There is an interesting article about Mike Ingham in the Daily Mail today. It refers to his book “After Extra Time And Penalties”.
It includes his Favourite specialist sport commentator, Favourite all-round commentator, Most difficult commentary position, Most evocative Premier League commentary position and Best team of players commentated on.
No mention of his favourite team, though.
