Both very good players, it is sometimes easy to forget how much patience is needed to develop some players even when the quality is there.

Thinking back to Finn Azaz on loan at Cheltenham and Newport at 20 and 21 years old. And then his inconsistency with us when he first arrived despite his obvious ability

Of course they have made mistakes and may not go on to be superstars but at 18/19 they are real prospects and noticeably in advance of our home grown 18/19 year olds for example.

As we know next season we are going to have to strengthen in several areas and it takes time for players to settle in. To lose another two promising youngsters would weaken our squad. It is easy to say they can be replaced without giving alternatives.

I’m not a huge fan of the loan system however as we are developing these youngsters and then suffer when they are recalled or sold. I understand this is the puddle in which we inhabit and so we must play accordingly….

We are going to have to do so much recruitment on and off the pitch from tomorrow onwards, why not keep quality instead of gambling for alternatives just because Foster signed them
or because they are not yet 100% consistent ?

Yes and Darko. Thought Devine looked very natural in his role today and didn’t misplace a pass. Phillips needs to play more mens football - would be happy to have him back here for us to offer it.
Devine could be the new Cundle and yes, how many 18 year old centrebacks are there at a decent level? Phillips will definitely play in the premier League.

Like you self I am not convinced by Philips, he doesn't get tight enough to strikers and gets turned to easy by smaller nibble strikers, his use and moving of the ball out from the back needs a lot of work too.

He would better off being loan.out to L1 team in playoffs like Barnsley
He's 18 for goodness sake. Can you remember when Argyle ever had an 18 year old central defender of that stature? He's bound for the Prem, make no mistake.

Already at a premier club, and just because he 18 and brought to club doesnt mean that he is ready.

He is over plays from the back and does not get tight enough to strikers when balls played to strikers feet inside the box.

Not saying he won't make it, but he has lots to learn and believe a loan stint to someone in L1 playoffs would benefit his development more.

He wouldn't be here if he was ready would he? Argyle have considered his progression at his age to be of Championship standard.

As squad players yes.
Devine needs to develop physically, which he will do, but I feel he is a bit lightweight at the moment.
Phillips, though physically impressive, still needs match time to improve his all round game.
