After seeing the first ever game thread this also got me thinking on my worst ever game. I’m sure this thread has been done before heaps of times, but I though hearing some other people’s horror stories might rekindle some memories too.

Also just gives us something to do whilst we wait for the coronation of His Excellency Sir Liam of Rosenior ✍️😀.

Me:

4th Jan 1997. Argyle v Peterborough FA Cup 2nd round. I was still at the stage where ALL argyle games were just excellent then, none were bad they were just “less then excellent”, but this was horrendous and broke the spell for the first time. I’ve always remembered it for that reason and also that it followed the 1st round 4-1 win against Exeter which is still one of my all time favourite memories. It was bitterly cold, the pitch was rock solid, I turned up thinking we’d pump them and then draw someone big in the third round. And it was absolutely awful. Bitterly cold day and I just remember Micky Heathcote hoofing the ball into the air the whole time. Terrible.

April 2010 - Watford 1 Argyle 0. We effectively were relegated that day. I’d rounded up 5 mates all with the promise of a decent day out at the football, none of whom were argyle fans. The ineptness of Kenny Cooper and particularly Damien Johnson that day I’ve just never managed to shift. Zero shots, wouldn’t have scored if we were still playing the game now.

August 2012 - Dagenham v Argyle. 0-0. Again I’d rounded up some mates from work who all supported bigger clubs with the promise of a fun evening and “that league two isn’t park football…” a few beers and it was just appalling. I’m only ever proud to be an argyle fan and I wasn’t proud that night, it was just abject misery the entire experience.

There are of course heaps more I’ll have been to others that were worse than these but it’s often about the context around the game that frames the whole experience and memory. However I’ve tried to keep it to three and these ones always stick out for me, maybe someone will remind me of one I’ve consigned to my therapists couch long ago.

I was at that 1-0 defeat away to Watford too... Absolutely dreadful and right up there with the worst I've seen.

In the season we were relegated to League 2 under Derek Adams, there were two 3-0 home defeats against Accrington at Christmas and Barnsley in the spring. Those have both stayed in my mind as deeply miserable games and really symbolise how poor an actually decent team were that year. We should never have gone down.

0-3 at Scarborough, then bottom of the football league, midweek before the Jimmy Glass Carlisle game.

And we still had a sniff of the play offs too, if memory serves me ok, an utterly feeble showing!

Pretty impressive to lose twice to a 92nd placed team within a few days, but we managed it, but at least the Carlisle defeat was special in its own way. 25 years ago yesterday, btw!

17th December 1994.
Brentford 7 Argyle 0

Just a woeful display. A mix up with the kit meant we came out looking like a pub team (green shirts, yellow shorts if I recall), then proceeded to play like one. Couldn't string a pass together, no effort, no enthusiasm & we made Brentford look like Brazil.
Probably the lowest moment in my years of following.

There was some absolute drivel played in the 90’s, too many to remember the individual teams to be honest. The second half against Sheff Wednesday this season will probably be the one that I will remember until I die though. Hideous.

On SKY for the entIre footballing world to see
Scott Twine our nemesis pulling the strings with Harry Darling
Absolute heartbreak for the players - but they took heartbreak & turned it into something special the following season - our 101 point League 1 Champion season whilst MK Dons got relegated

For me the 3 home games we played with the Covid restrictions.
Just realised it wasn’t the football I missed but the socialising around the match.

I was in the Boardroom when we drew 0-0 at Dagenham. They absolutely pummelled us, their Directors were almost annoyed at how luck we were. It could have 4/5 - 0 yo them! 😀

My worst game was at Oxford we lost 0-2 to an Oxford team that were very poor themselves. 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' was sung that day.

To make things worse Mackie scored the first and he celebrated like mad. I never liked him before but i definitely didn't after. Then Curtis Nelson got the second, what a day eh?

The playoff final against Wimbledon. We just didn’t turn up. Been plenty more boring games or ones against Wycombe where they were rolling on the ground all game but with what was at stake against Wimbledon it has to be that for me
Agreed. This was on my longer list. Yet again I’d rounded up some mates to come with me and it was just SUCH a let down.

There were some games under Mick Jones in the late 90s that I remember being bad but they just sort of blurred together, in front of crowds of 4-5k.

My weirdest one was against Swansea, 2001. The day the twin towers were hit. Nicky Banger playing. Less than 4,000 there. It was a sort of funeral-like atmosphere, exacerbated by the fact that there was no horseshoe, just rubble. It felt weirdly symbolic and I’ve never forgotten it.

I remember wanting to be around other people and then feeling guilty as this tragedy had happened over in NYC and we were all trying to work it out.

…….Anyway back to the main point of the thread. The WORST!

Agree re MK Dons game, only game I've ever walked out of after 70 minutes. Wimbledon playoff game runs it close as I had my three London based sons along for the promotion party!

Macclesfield 4 Argyle 1. April 2000.

Think we were 3 down by half time in front of about crowd of 2,000 l.

Kevin Hodges was in charge of our team, but as it turned out he was only few months from being sacked.

We had chance of making the 4th tier play offs but played like a non League team. Think Sean McCarthy scored but also got sent off. Total embarrassing performance.

Argyle at Wembley has always been rubbish. At least we won the 95/96 play off final although it was a dreadful match. The Wimbledon play-off final and the dross against Bolton in the Mickey Mouse cup final last year were not good to watch.

I've seen plenty of dross over the past 36 years of watching. Losing in the league cup at Barnet one night and watching Taribo West get the run around time and again, or an FA Cup replay defeat at Dagenham in the early noughties that was live on TV. I think it's the games with real meaning that hurt more. Watching us hammered at Bury one Easter about 10 years ago to miss out on the play offs was a real disappointment, but I think this beauty takes the biscuit:

3 down in the p*ssing rain at Accrington at half time, and a 1-5 defeat overall. Adams loses his job, we drop into the relegation zone and go down from there. Thankfully I've had better trips to Accrington since to wipe away that memory. Hoping when we go to Burnley next season that I can exorcise the ghost of getting relegated in the last 1990s, as that was another major disappointment, particularly as I spent my entire student grant for the term on travel and tickets, then changed trains at Preston to find it full of Bristol City fans celebrating promotion!

Rotherham in the late sixties. Drew 0-0 in the season when both teams were relegated from the old division two. Awful game the only match I've ever watched from the Barn Park end as there were so few in the crowd.

I rock up at Wembley last year for my first Argyle game in about 25 years, full of excitement along with 35000 other Argyle fans and ‘bam’ a 4-0 defeat. A dreadful performance and a dreadful day.

Serves me right for leaving it 25 years!
