As one of the more green tinted fans I can safely say that typical Argo almost returned today and for the first half our predictable formation and pattern was beautifully outwitted by Crewe, who were not adverse to the odd dark art, helped by the worst ref i have seen in a while (also physically unfit).
Second half, Derek made the vital changes and Bliss is starting to look a real player. Crewe couldn't keep up the tempo and were being forced back, although they still largely did well to nullify out creative players. Set pieces and a bit of luck with Sawyers shot saved the day.
Now it would be a nice birthday present to get the Championship!
I do agree, however after seeing Argyle away from home a few times l feel we do the "dark arts" too and so what Crewe did today e.g. Fall down easily is something that goes on throughout league two.
The first half they bossed us. With a quicker tempo of passing and speed from out wide causing us issues. There were numerous times they got behind us and crossed the ball in and just failed to get a touch.
Their goal was a great piece of technique on the volley. Kept the ball down well from the edge of the box and drilled it into the corner. Argyle just couldn't get going. Play was at a very slow tempo and we had chances to get the ball in the box early but we wanted more touches. The Argyle midfield have three attack minded players. What it doesn't have is a ball winner. So there are numerous times, like Crewe did first half, where teams play through us. After they scored they had other "opportunities" most notably a one two the right midfielder played to get in behind Sawyer. He drilled a beautiful ball across the face of goal, only for the forward to miss who somehow got himself offside too. McCormick also made a great save to a shot/cross that seemed to be looping under his bar.
We were fortunate, lucky....call it what you like....but 1-0 to Crewe didn't flatter them.
Second half was more positive. Blissett came on. Yet when Bradley came on 10-15 mins in the second half Argyle seemed more composed. The ship seemed more steady. We huffed and puffed and controlled a lot of possession but were let down by some wayward passing and crossing.
Yet what they side has is the ability to never give up. The effort and work rate has to be commended. It's gets them out of these situations.
The crowd really tried to get behind the team. The first goal was a little fortunate, after a mis-hit shot by Sawyer it fell to Taylor who swivelled and turned. Great finish.
HP was now rocking. The players had their tails up. Then came a sensational cross by Carey and a great header by Blissett. The celebrations were fantastic.
We reverted back to 4-2-3-1 with Blissett moving wide right. Crewe tried to wrestle back control. A number of corners and crosses came in the box but Argyle saw it out.
The midfield needs sorting out next season. We need people to play behind the more attacking players and do more of the donkey work. The full backs, Sawyer and Miller, are too slow. Yet that's for the Adams to sort out. The team deserve credit for a second half performance which wasn't brilliant, but where they just refused to give up. A couple of pieces of quality and we won the game, 2-1. Really today was a reflection of a number of games we have witnessed this season.
Never say die attitude, which has brought us on the brink of winning the championship.
