Ryan is a good player but he’s actually always been a bit of a patchy finisher. I think the problem is that we’re now creating fewer opportunities and therefore his misses are standing out more, whereas last season and earlier this season another chance would always be just around the corner.

What has happened to Ryan, he was so damn clinical earlier in the season, now he can't get a goal.
Is it the tactics, his confidence, as he just lost his mojo? It is very worrying. I think he needs a rest, maybe start with Bundu on Monday.

I think it’s because of two reasons.

1. The 4-3-3 suited him better. He only had to play between the width of the penalty box. Which meant he could try and get on the end of things more. The 3-4-2-1 means he has to run more & chase long balls. He spends less time in the box, because he is looking to start moves in the final third than finish them.

2. He had a purple goalscoring spell. He now unfortunately dried up in terms of goals. It’s not such his mojo he has lost but perhaps his goalscoring ability isn’t quite of the pace we saw earlier in the season.

Higher league, better opposition, less cĥances. Still the best forward option we have got. Hope he hits another purple patch.

He's a streaky goalscorer and is currently going through a rough patch just when we need him.
He just might get something like 5 goals from the final 7 games.

This season: 5 goals in first 8 games and then one goal in the next 12 games followed by 6 goals in 9 games and then the current run of one goal in 9.

Last season: 7 goals in 14 games, followed by 3 goals in 17 games, and then 7 in 11 and then no goals in 12.

2021/2022: 10 goals in 13 games, 2 in 18 games and then 7 in 10 games.

2020/2021: 6 goals all season.

2019/2020: 7 goals in 13 games.

His decision making is the issue.

At Blackburn in his first half miss it looked easier to just lift the ball over the keeper rather than the choice he made.

Today his second half chance saw him hit Gunn's leg as opposed to his usual more composed finish.

Agreed. He needs a lot of chances to take one. Not what you'd call a clinical finisher but the best we've got and fingers crossed he hits another purple patch over last 7 games...

Surely, this then points to why Argyle are now struggling.

With only Hardie as an experienced forward & his record as a ‘streaky’ forward, surely this is one major factor as why Argyle are struggling, especially for goals recently. He’s been here long enough for Argyle to see they needed an alternative to him.

I don’t think that there’s anything wrong. The first chance was an acute angle and the second was on target but the keeper was out quickly and got a foot to it.

Correct. We had alternative options last season - Ennis and Cosgrove. I find it really strange that we’ve now had two windows since they left and we still haven’t signed another striker, even a L1 level kind of striker would have been better than nobody at all.

It really wasn't that acute. At that level it should be scored. Chances like that don't come very often. He's a good League 1 striker. Has many limitations and his finishing blows hot and cold. We need more than that.
