Last night we played Grimsby FFS...... GRIMSBY (even the name is depressing) ........on a wet Tuesday night. We're not playing Real Madrid just yet - let's be realistic.

Somewhat patronising on a club whose average finishing position in English football each season is 42nd...…. six places ABOVE that of Argyle's

;)

Paul I know you're an anorak but I find that stat incredible, are you sure?

If you go back to the 1800s and pre war he would have a case but for any Argyle fan under about 75 the stat would indeed be surprising and for the under 30 odds even more so. They were 15 years in league 2 or non league until recently.

To be fair, it was only up to and including season 2016-17

It wouldn't let me copy the link so had to Copy/paste. Like i said, two years out of date so there might be few movers, especially Bournemouth. It also looks like Wimbledon FC and AFC Wimbledon have been counted as one and the same, which is only right really.

Interesting to see the comments comparing it to our away atmosphere - harsh truth is that’s also gone right down the pan this season and has been heading that way for a while.

We’ve now got a rep for travelling in big numbers but making zero noise.

There was a thread about this earlier on in the season, I still think it's a bit of a relegation hangover from us being back in league 2 again.

There are nowhere near as many chants for individual players, for the manager or for the team as there were in DA's first three seasons.

Weird as the football is more entertaining but I did think the Devonport was flat last night and has been all season.

I don’t think the pre match dirge helps in atmosphere building

This issue with atmosphere is happening pretty much everywhere. There isn’t much noise at HP full stop. It’s the same at most grounds these days. Argyle travel in numbers to away games, but the atmosphere has been poor there too. Swindon were very quiet when we went there and as recently as last Saturday, Bradford was dead despite a fairly big crowd, giving Argyle fans the chance to sing the library song with full justification. I used to go to Anfield quite a bit in the 70's and early 80's and can tell you that the atmosphere then was absolutely unbelievable. It’s still decent but nothing like it was.
The atmosphere at my beloved Hillsborough, despite home crowds always being 20k plus, is currently very poor, so I think it’s across the board really. Maybe generational, who knows.

As pointed out in the Daily Update thread today, we also suffer from having hardly any away fans at home park to help generate an atmosphere.

Does that really make a difference? At Selhurst Park we get 2,500 away fans but from the other end you can see they chanting and gesturing but you rarely hear them.

The HF section are behind me and are tremendously loud when you’re beside them but from 20 rows in front of them the sound just doesn’t carry.

If the acoustics of a stadium aren’t right then you need everyone joining in to create a cauldron of sound.

Yes acoustics make a big difference and HP isn’t great in that regard but it always strikes me that the atmosphere is better when there are more away fans. Maybe that’s just because they tend to just be the bigger, more important games anyway. Interesting point you make about Selhurst, I’ve been in the Arthur Wait Stand 3 or 4 times watching Argyle and the atmosphere always sounded great under the old roof - I guess the sound doesn’t project out to the rest of the ground though.

I think that generally, most away fans go home thinking / claiming they've outsung the home lot. Accurate or not, I reckon acoustics have a lot to do with it.
