The "tents" were inflatable multi purpose spaces. They had to be continuously pumped with air to keep them up and the doors were air locks to stop them deflating. The advantage was there was no internal supporting structure. Don't think they lasted more than a few years.

29 Grand Parade - The ship HMS Hood - For 20 years or so, she was the largest warship in the world. Sunday, 24th May will be the 79th anniversary of her sinking with the loss of all but 3 of the 1418 men on board.
