Was only thinking about the big man a few weeks ago, thinking that Argyle could do with a player like him.
Was one of my early Argyle idols, great memories, including the famous win at the Den, Mike and Alan Banks scored.
RIP, and condolences to his family.
Fond memories of Mike Bickle and his 3 and 4 goal hauls in the mid to late 60s. A team packed full of local talent, something we will never see again and of course the best Argyle shirt of all, though this season's runs it close for me.RIP
Mike was the man when I started watching Argyle in 1968, everyone wanted to be him.
My brother-in-law Denis always claimed he played a part in persuading Mike to trial for Argyle! He was the accountant at Plymouth Dairies where Mike worked at the time.
Bickle, Trebilcock, Piper, Jones - what great players and what a great team back in the day. I’ve no doubt there will be a moving and heartfelt tribute to him on Saturday afternoon which we can all embrace.
Hero - Idol - Legend.
thanks for my memories. I was so lucky to have you as my uncle. What an upbringing I had. Training with argyle at brickfields, higher efford and Central Park On school holidays. A whole six week stay when you transferred to gillingham training with the team at a park I think with great big monuments on the hillside. No big training establishments in those days.
And only recently my excitement at argyle releasing the white and green shirts from the 60s. Going on holiday to Benidorm wearing those shirts and telling everyone my uncle scored 74 goals for argyle (our team). privileged and proud.
Really bleddy struggling with this news.
As with many of us, Mike was one of my earlier Argyle heroes.
I was 10 when he hit 4 against Cardiff, but remember it well and, of course, the 4 against Torquay a while later.
He certainly knew where the goal was.
Thanks for the memories Bicks!
Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Yes, fond memories is right, early days of watching Argyle. At the time he was playing for Argyle I remember as a kid watching a local match at Unity Park (good pitch Unity Park) opposite Peter Andersons shop across the road from Efford Cemetary and thinking that Mike Bickle had probably played there for Co-op Welfare before joining Argyle. That was part of what made 'local boy makes good' something in those days - they probably played on the same local pitches as most others. Wasn't it against Hull when we won 3-1 that he punched the ball in at the Barn Park End and it was given? You, sort of, expected him to score.
I recall vividly our sadness, but pride, that St Austell would be losing Mike, amidst rumours that brother Reg, his right winger teammate, would be following him.
That didn’t happen, but Mike’s popularity & success at Argyle certainly did!
RIP Mike, a favourite Pilgrim
A childhood hero - who can forget that toothless grin standing in front of the Demport End after scoring (again). Years later I played against him at Macadam Rd in Cattedown - I can’t remember who he was playing for but I think I was playing for Hooe St John. I was centre half and he was centre forward. I won the first aerial challenge with him. During a lull in play I told him that he was a hero of mine. His reply was “That’s all well and good but win a header again and I’ll break your legs” with a big grin on his face. Lol. What a guy. RIP Bicks - condolences to his family x
A big loss. Part of my teenage years has been ripped away. Was at the aforementioned Swindon, Corby Town and Torquay games - still remember the goals. Very sad today.
That’s sad news a real old school centre forward I remember him banging in goals for StAustell and being a supporter of St Blazey as well at the time I was not best pleased but when he signed for Argyle all was forgiven. A real legend of his time thanks for the memories Mike.
