I have been to every Newport game home and away since 1979 I have never had any problems apart from getting soaked the last time. The year before I stayed in Newport after the game and found the fans I met in the pub friendly enough.

When were the steps blocked I went down them the police were stood at the bottom

I got out of the ground right on the final whistle, the stewards prevented my wife and I that we couldn't walk down the steps. I asked them what authority they had to prevent me from doing so to which they said the police had told them. By the time I had waked around the top and to the bottom of the steps people were being allowed down the steps. I asked a pc what the problem was he said he had no idea but the stewards had decided to block off the steps!!!!

I reckon I must have been stood next to you at the time of this, so I can concur. The stewards said they were blocking the steps on the orders of the police, who who mobbed up at the bottom of the steps. I walked back about 15-20 yards then jumped over the fence and down the bank and asked the coppers wtf they thought they were doing. They said it was nothing to do with them. Blaming each other for a crackpot decision just makes them both look like amateurs. Sadly not surprising though with the records of our police and stewards at games.

Christ, it's unusual for you to moan.

I've met several friendly Millwall fans, I count one as a good friend. I wouldn't skip happily and carefree through Central Park at on a thinly policed match day though.

There's good and bad in every club, but some just stand out. Newport are one of them. Add in yesterday that it was a warm August Bank Holiday weekend, when 'firms' tend to like a bit of away day 'fun' and it'd be hugely naive to parade the normal matchday numbers. Almost as naive as fans throwing their arms up in surprise that it happened.

Blame Newport, blame their reputation and the reputation of all travelling 'firms' on Bank Holiday weekends by the sea since the Leeds rampage at Bournemouth in the 80's, but don't blame the stewards and the old bill for keeping you safe on the basis of those historical events. They're doing their jobs and with no significant incidents they did it well.

Folk ridicule health and safety all the time. Yet look at any A&E department at any given time and you'll see that human beings are basically all idiots that'll risk themselves and others doing deliberate or reckless things to themselves and each other. Also take a look at the court list for small claims court or the in tray of any solicitors office and you'll see they're full of cases where human beings seek to gain cash from others if they feel they weren't sufficiently protected.

Add that all up and you get the world we live in now. Fundamentally a world where authorities are charged with protecting idiots from themselves and each other in full knowledge that if they don't do that the idiots will claim compensation from them.

Still surprised by yesterday's match safety requirements?

A large group of the police were 'escorting and filming' a group of around 20 supporters walking through the car park int he direction of The Brit after the match. The supporters were not wearing the football colours of either team or travelling by coach (they were walking in totally the wrong direction). I am not an expert but I would say these were the people who were likely to cause trouble and I was glad that there were enough police to ensure this didn't happen. If there was trouble, quite a few paying spectators would be put off going to matches 'with potential for trouble' in future.

You can tell Argyle are doing well when you start to see supporters wearing shirts that they bought 30 years ago or more.

Aren't they some of the people that Argyle are hoping to entice back to watch matches again? Good - it's working. :scarf:

Better they were those that are deemed retro than the last couple seasons ... some of the array of shirts on the official site photos are embarrassing
