I'm glad we're getting more experienced, commanding, defenders but I worry we might end up reverting to the issue we've had in recent seasons of having no pace at the back. I might be wrong so will reserve judgement until after the transfer window closes but his comments certainly suggest that's the way he's going to go.
I agree that is a concern. The trouble is any defenders who have lots of experience, are dominant in the air and in the tackle AND have pace almost certainly wouldn’t be playing in league 1. I guess at this level it’s about having different defenders with different attributes and hope they can all complement each other.

The Sonny Bradley comparison is in danger of becoming as hackneyed as the Alex Ferguson line people roll out whenever a new manager is struggling. "Imagine if United had sacked him before that Forest FA Cup game" goes the usual refrain.

Fergie was a one off, and Dan Scarr is not Sonny Bradley, he's Dan Scarr.

Very true, I have been in pain with each new poster who thinks they are the first one to mention Sonny Bradley.

Last night I was going to suggest the moderators implementing a £10 donation to charity!!

Imagine our fanbase now when they watch Scarr and realise he maybe isn't Championship calibre CB and captain material, but a League Two level defender who has flaws and weaknesses the way that the maligned Canavan, Wootton and Aimson did.

A valid point. Hopefully Lowe will get a few defenders in as I can imagine we might be racking up the yellows/reds and picking up suspensions. The type of defenders he's pulling in don't look like they're the sort to let nippy strikers run past them.

I saw a few comments from Walsall fans saying that Scarr is fairly quick for a lower league centre back. So maybe not as immobile as his traits and build suggest.

EXETER/OWLERTON
There will always be supporters who criticise certain players, even where the majority seem to rate them. Mayor is a perfect example. So I don’t know what proportion of the Walsall support don’t rate Scarr And I can’t remember what most of them thought about Edwards, but the rest is history as far as the latter is concerned, as someone else said on here.

My only concern about Scarr is whether he can be developed by the coaching staff at HP. The record so far hasn’t been great when one thinks about Canavan and Wootton and I still think a specialist defensive coach is a pretty big requirement. Won’t be long before we can judge his ability for ourselves.

Hey Owl

Could this young guy Urhgohide, who is leaving Hillsborough, do a job for Lowe?

Championship bound though?

Is he more of a full back than a central defender?

So the data analysis has thrown up Scarr as the best available centre back? I hope to be proved wrong but a player from a struggling division two side is hardly inspiring. If he's the standard we are looking at to strengthen our team god help us!

I'll ask you again then, name some players of the kind you think we should (and could) be signing... Who would you find inspiring? Who would make you think 'great, we don't need God's help'?

(And by the way - NO-ONE has indicated that the data analysis has thrown up Scarr as the best available centre back. That is entirely your supposition)

Good question about naming some players…. as usual the silence is deafening

That's good to hear, ultimately we need a mix of pace and experience along our back line, pace being a requisite for both left and right sided CBs, if one of those has experience as well then that is a bonus

Good point, but comments that he is "square footed" and "just hoofs it" are concerning.

Mind you, many comments on the Walsall forum were damning of the whole team and management.
Perhaps in a different setting.....

Walsall fans are hardly going to say he’s any good when he’s just turned them down and generally p’eed off with their club, are they!? Means nothing for me.

Agree with this- I think it’s important to put the fans’ comments in context... it’s bleak times at their football club at this time. They only won 11 games last season. The team finished 19th- just 8 points clear of relegation.

Manager Darrell Clarke left mid way through the season, for port vale. Their newly appointed manager, has no experience as a first team manager. Star striker Elijah adebayo was sold to Luton on January transfer deadline day.

But amongst all this the Walsall defence ( of which Dan scarr was a central part) was always stron. They concede only 53 goals in 46 games.

So a key player- scarr- has rejected the club- just the next one in a serious of rejections- and how are we expecting the fans to react to yet another rejection ?

Bearing in mind scarr has already played 17 times in league 1 during his relatively limited professional career, to date; also that Birmingham city have signed him TWICE- once as a youngster and the second time for a fee from Stourbridge ( with a 2 1/2 year contract, and also that Ryan Lowe has seen something in him..... then I think I’ll reserve judgement on this one ( not withstanding the comments from Walsall fans) .....

Most of the particularly scathing comments were written on the day it was announced he had been offered a new contract, several weeks before he signed for Argyle.

Interesting to note, from a historical perspective, that scarr joins us at the same age as Graham coughlan did.... and, surprisingly, with slightly more, first team experience....
