Sadly this is a corner that football has backed itself into. The police can take no chances where any sort of local derby or threat is concerned. Whether we are at home or away to the likes of City, Swindon, Portsmouth or the Bristol teams, away fans are going to get herded to and from the stadium.

Somebody mentioned Watford a while ago. My brother lived many years just across the road from Vicarage Road.
(Aynho St if you're interested, lovely view of the cemetery)
Once, after a game they were keenly urging us away from the stadium, march round 3 sides then off to Watford Junction whether you came by train or not. My brother helpfully waved his front door key and said: 'There, I live there!'.
We were threatened with arrest but held our ground and asked for a Senior Officer, policeman then decided we'd be best off on a supporter's coach, any coach, whether we came by coach or not!
We eventually found a policeman who didn't just say: 'Doing my job, sir'. He walked to the door with us and brother let himself in!
That seemed to satisfy him but I still worry that we could have been banged up for breaking and entering!!
(Yes pedants, don't bother! We had a key! I know!)

Yes, it is a difficult job but pragmatism, common sense and adaptability are great traits in a PC!

Had a similar thing last time I went to Portsmouth by car. As they held us near the train station, I asked why we were being held. "Because we don't want overcrowding on the platform, Sir" came the reply. I told him my car was parked just a couple of hundred metres further along the street and he wouldn't budge saying we were all getting on the train. Had to loudly ask for a senior officer and then ask loudly if I was being unlawfully being detained as I wasn't getting on the train and therefore should be allowed to make my way out of the cordon. The question about whether or not I was being detained struck a chord and I was allowed to leave.

Expect the same if not worse treatment at Exeter,

It beggars belief that the police can make a discriminantal judgement on just who should and who shouldn't be penned into an escort regardless of if they are going by train or not. Seemingly based on what they are wearing and their age..

Last time at Exeter I strolled up from the city centre with my daughter straight into the ground and did the reverse at the end. I donā€™t recall feeling any sense of threat or seeing any particularly large police presence or crowd control tactics.

Well lucky for you. Like I say they were discriminatory. Letting some people walk freely past while hurling others (myself included) into an escort. I Shouldn't have to take my daughter with me just to ensure I am allowed to be a free citizen.

She's 21 (now) and bigger than me by the way... but we would have been indistinguishable from city centre shoppers, most Exeter City fans etc. so I am sure that helped.

Lostwithiel, Capital of Cornwall.
A work's colleague of my wife was on the train home from Bristol last weekend and apparently some of the Argyle supporters on the way home were very vile and abusive to other customers, and indeed to some of the train staff. Don't the British Transport Police travel on the trains nowadays? Such a shame.

Yes they do. I was on the 1731 eastbound and that had plod on it - maybe PASALB has something of a reputation in some quarters. Train manager apologised to the punters not for behaviour or anything but said not to be alarmed at presence of the police, it was because of the football.
Perhaps they got on the wrong 1731.

Probably precautionary measures after recent issues with Newport.

What issues at Newport? I didnā€™t see any trouble ... or maybe I missed it..?

it beggars belief that the police feel the need to do this at all. Just shows how many total morons still attach themselves to football clubs, solely to get drunk/ do drugs/ play the tough guy when visiting towns and cities around the country.

You don't see these chav idiots at any other sport - shame they don't sod off back in to their neanderthal caves

Yup, plus Boat Race, Wimbledon and Surfing at Newquay. But I'd hope my point was made.

It's a strange thing on the internet, someone makes a damming statement, someone challenges it and usually the poster never comes back to say 'yeah but.............' just silence. :tumbleweed:

Do I need to go on?

I've seen trouble at both rugby league and ice hockey games I have gone to, so it definitely isn't just restricted to football. First time I attended a Fife Flyers vs Braehead/Glasgow Clan derby in the elite league(ice hockey) I couldn't believe how hostile and vicious the atmosphere was. Safe to say it kicked off a few times and due to the lack of a stewarding for a near 3000 crowd there were incidents all throughout the evening.

It's safe to say that trouble between rival fans is not just limited to football but happens in many sports, throughout the world.

none of your clips show organised gangs like you see at football. You can trawl the net all you like, but I find it stunning how people defend the actions of these people. You have to be a completely arrogant moron to try and pretend it isn't the case. There must have been 150/ 200 men with their burberry uniforms on when we were in Chippenham. Showing a couple of clips showing isolated cases is bollox, violence has long been footballs disease, and it has never gone away.
