I don't understand the near panic over Carey and Jervis. The football club has an option to extend their contracts which they can exercise at anytime up to June 30 2016. The question is when they are playing for us in League 1 next year will they be still good enough playing at a higher level to try to keep for longer.

The reason is obvious surely. The players dont have to extend their contracts if they dont want to.Therefore they can be off in the summer and we will get nowt or in January and we wont get a lot. Personally I would prioritise McHugh over Jervis.

If Argyle take out the option to extend the contracts the players have to accept. This only applies to this summer's signings.

There is some debate whether all players have signed up to have that clause in their contract. There is even more debate whether Carey is one of those players.

Paignton....was Derby
You have to remember Adams has signed Carey on two or three occasions in the past which must count for something. Its not just about who you play for or the money but being happy settled and successful too. I would go out on a limb to think as a player having the chance of gaining promotion and winning silverware is a good reason to stay. Potentially as it's been started many times in the past we have, it's whether the important people at our club believe in that potential and want to stay and be apart of it. Fingers crossed.

At Meet the Manager events pre-season Adams said all his signings had them.

It has been stated in local media that Carey has one.

There really isn't a debate.

I think what Mark's referring to, is the idea that the players have to accept if the club opts to trigger the extension. Presumably they don't have to, otherwise it would be a two year contract with an option to terminate after one year.

There would be no point putting in the clause if there was a choice on whether they player could sign the extension or not after reaching whatever the agreement is, say 30 appearances or something.

Perhaps, but why are news outlets reporting that Adams is going to 'start contract talks' with Jervis and Carey, if it was just a case of triggering an automatic extension?

If January is to see an increase of the playing budget due to League position and the higher than expected gate receipts, would the GA rather see this spent on improved contracts for some of the current players or used to bolster the squad with new additions for the promotion push?

The language used is "the club has the option" "trigger". When Hartley's was extended in the summer there was absolutely no suggestion he had a choice.

I just really don't get why we are worrying about players who clubs two divisions higher aren't going to pay the going rate for when Nelson, Hartley, McCormick, McHugh and Reid all actually have only 6 months left and are ripe for picking off.

No matter what Adams said previously. Carey does NOT have the automatic trigger.

Would have preferred that to have not become public but hay ho.

At Senior Greens today Graham Carey said he was on a two year contract as his contract has been extended because he has triggered a clause in his contract based on the number of games he had started so far this season.
