That's more like it!

It was easily the best performance of the season, 3-1 flattered Gillingham because we deserved to win by five or six.
The whole mindset of the team was totally different and light years ahead of that poor second half display against Oxford.
Each player chased, harried, closed down and tackled, typified by Ness and Fox. They played just in front of the back four and were instrumental in this new found belief, they blocked, tackled, passed and often just got a toe in to break up a Gillingham attack.

It was a bold move by Derek Adams to change three quarters of the back four and Peter Grant was unlucky to be dropped but the replacement centre-backs Songo'o and Canavan put dangerman Tom Eaves in their back pocket.
Conor Grant played as a makeshift left-back and his performance looked like he played his whole career in that position, he was also dangerous when taking our set-pieces, his delivery is excellent.
So credit to Adams for making the changes which paid off.

The football was neat passing into space or playing on the counter attack. The second goal was a thing of beauty, we were under pressure but several clever passes allowed Conor Grant space on the left and his perfect cross found Ladapo. The TV highlights probably won't show the whole move for that goal.

The build up to the game was just horrible, something needed to change so Adams made five changes, out went Peter Grant, Lameiras, Edwards (completely from the squad), Smith-Brown and O'Keefe and in came Songo'o, Canavan, the Grants - Joel and Conor - and Ness.

You could tell within the first 10 minutes that the players had a different mindset, Saturday's attacking performance was not too bad, it was the defence that had a nightmare but against Gillingham the players were determined not to let Gillingham get near Macey, highlighted by Fox and especially Ness closing down and flying into challenges. This set the tone for the rest of the match.

The new back four quickly settled down and had time to pass the ball along the defence, probing for an opening further forward - it's something we hadn't done much this season but regularly started play from the back four last season.

Carey, as ever, assisted for the first goal when he laid a ball inside to Ladapo, his shot found the roof of the net. So simple. 1-0.

We had to protect that lead, mindful of recent collapses after scoring so the players again closed down space and put pressure on Gillingham.
Once we got the ball we played through the midfield with long balls to Ladapo a rarity and played only when necessary.

Gillingham did have several free-kicks and corners and from one of these we scored our second goal!
We defended well, passed around and found Conor Grant clear on the left his inch perfect cross was deftly headed in by Ladapo. 2-0. Some strikers might have tried the bullet header but Ladapo very cleverly just glanced the ball in.
The weight of desperation suddenly lifted from the pitch and the stands, only a condescending club statement could spoil this night!

The players left the pitch to a very good reception at half time.

Carey picked up an injury just before half time but came out for the second half.

The game continued in the same way, although Gillingham had to push forward which left gaps at the back, chances fell for Carey and Joel Grant while Sarcevic had two great chances but on one he slowed down and the ball was cleared and the other he shot just wide when it looked easier to score.

At the other end Macey didn't have a lot to do except for collect a few crosses, which in this game he did with ease.

Carey limped off and was replaced by Lameiras and soon after scored our third. He played a long one-two with Ladapo and just squeezed the ball over the line. 3-0 and surely game safe!

Unfortunately Lameiras showed in a space of a few minutes why he is so good at attacking but a liability at the back because he gave away a needless free-kick and from it O'Neil scored with a deflected shot. 3-1.

We didn't crumble and played the same way and created more chances, scoring 4 goals would be the stuff of fantasy so we settled for 3 goals and 3 points that lifts us off the bottom of League One and within 2 points of safety.

Ness had a storming game and made a huge difference, along with Fox he dominated the midfield.
Sarcevic played further forward, almost in the number 10 role, and had an influence on the game before tiring.

Have we found a 20 goal a season striker? Ladapo is red hot at the moment and should have had a hat trick, he did tire late in the game and if he's ever injured we'd lack a cutting edge.

Conor Grant was a revelation at left-back, strong and tidy and should nail down that position, although his lack of pace might mean he would struggle against pacy wingers. Our fourth left-back this season.

Canavan and Songo'o were solid as our new centre-back partnership and kept Tom Eaves in check.

The performance was similar to the performances in the second half of last season, the key is to repeat the performance game by game. The only way to stop criticism of players and manager and patronising statements aimed at fans is to win games, so we should look forward to a peaceful few days in Argyle land. :)

Man of the match - Ness.

Macey 6, Moore 6, Songo'o 7, Canavan 7, C Grant 8, Fox 8, Ness 8, Sarcevic 7, Carey 7, J Grant 7, Ladapo 7. Subs Lameiras 7, O'Keefe 6, Jephcott n/a.

Best performance of the year against the worst team I've seen in a long time. Can we keep this type of performance up against Scunthorpe and Sunderland? If so, we'll be out of this predicament in a short time.

Thoroughly enjoyable game and performance.

Played well, looked like a proper team and the crowd were great.
Now going to enjoy a few beers in the hotel bar and look forward to reading Pasoti tonight. We all deserve this!

The issue is how do we with those players sometimes look so awful.Must be down to the tactics and negative set up usually employed.

Connor Grant has accidentally found a position that works as he's nlt a CM. Well done DA for a risk paying off.

I've always liked Songoo as a CD, so glad that worked out. Canavan looked like he was grabbing an opportunity.

Most put a shift in but GC10 is still misfiring. Surely his poor form can't go on much longer!

Freddy the difference though, excellent finishibg and Ness played a bit of a grafting blinder, similar to last Winter.

Joel Grant usual ineffectual self but didn't seem to matter much. Well done Ruben on the sub impact goal too.

Now have to follow this up with a similar performance and hopefully a first league away win on Saturday. Another crunch game at Scunthorpe!

Great win, Gillingham were poor but all credit to Adams for being positive and taking to it a poor opposition.

Let's go again Saturday.

Enjoyed the win but it will take a prolonged run of good performances to convince me we can get back on track. There have been too many cock ups to get carried away.

I couldn't fault any player tonight. Everyone was on the front foot and willing to push themselves leaving nothing on the park come the final whistle. Sarcevic is getting back to being the player that I remember from the tail end of last season. His energy is impressive. Grant (C) was solid and composed at left back and is the position I think he should concentrate on. He is not a midfielder. He should take a leaf out of Oscars book and accept he is a full back. I predict he will spend most of the season there especially if he puts in more performances like that. Ness was different gravy tonight. He broke up everything. Strong in the challenge, composed on the ball and was making all the right choices. Even Carey decided he would put in a showing tonight. Songo'o was his usual dependable and fearless self. Eaves didn't get a look in. I was really pleased that Joel Grant got 90 mins tonight. He is an exceptionally talented player that doesn't get enough game time in my opinion. His first touch is sublime. He protects the ball beautifully and has both strength and speed. For the first time tonight Adams has played to our strengths. None of this sitting back and trying to steadily break teams down, getting the one goal and then protecting that lead. This time he sent them out and told them to express themselves. Do the things that they're good at. Quick, slick passing as well as excellent movement off the ball. Everybody was working for everyone else just as a team should do. People may look at Gillingham and say that they weren't a good side. I'd say that they were made to look a poor side. Lets not forget that they scored 3 at Doncaster on Saturday who we know are no mugs. We did not give them a sniff. We huffed and puffed and defended from the front. Closing them down and forcing them into the punt downfield which we made sure we picked up. All in all it was an excellent evening at the office. Hopefully they now know what it takes to get a good result and fingers crossed they can replicate that effort in the future games. If they do then we will win far more than we lose.

Great to see the positive reviews.

Intrigued by the Conor Grant selection. Was this a one off or a master tactical change?

Can we risk playing him there at Scunthorpe? When I have seen him, he didn't look particularly quick. Sure that is why Joel Grant was recalled to provide additional cover on that side.

Will he be capable of handling a speedy wide player?

Movement off the ball, interchange, tempo, getting in behind, stretching the play, decision making - all polar opposites to Saturday. The cohesion we showed in attack was particularly pleasing with Carey, Ness and Sarcevic playing some really slick one/two touch passing. Ladapo also critical in this as he dropped deep and linked up play really well. The ball was mostly kept on the deck and was very pleasing to see so.

Adams - so much more like it. Keep doing that and you can shove my "Adams out" from Saturday right back down my throat. Long way to go, a lot of hard work still to do. But that is so much better.

Gillingham were atrocious. Not even an effective long ball team, they were just lumping it somewhere in the vague direction of Eaves and hoping he'd achieve something on his own. Feel sorry for their fans having to watch that performance.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching Argyle tonight though - it felt like we had our old team back again (which in terms of the shape and the midfield trio, we did... coincidentally!).

This needs to be the start of a fightback from us. We proved tonight that we are capable on our day, now we need to prove that we are capable of sustaining it.

Good atmosphere from the fans at the end. You see how this works Derek - if you deliver the sh!te we saw on Saturday, you can't not expect (rightly or wrongly) the reaction you got. Deliver something like tonight, and we'll back the team 100%.

Ratings:
Macey 7 - their goal was well-struck, low and through a crowd. Completely blameless. Only one or two bad kicks, the odd good save and really good command of area.

Moore 5 - Carey drifting inside a lot (which I like, it's what makes our play so fluid and dangerous) did leave Moore exposed to 2-on-1's a fair bit. However, he still struggled a bit and showed a few customary moments of poor technique. Not terrible, but not great.
Songo'o 8 - exactly what we needed on Saturday. Not pretty or cultured or anything, but will simply chuck himself into every aerial dual going and never shy away.
Canavan 8 - directed his headers very well, better than Peter Grant does. Played the ball out well and also defends well too - very impressive.
Conor Grant 8 - wow, what a find this could be. If he plays like that every week then forget being a centre mid, we've found ourselves a starting left back! Fantastic cross for the 2nd goal.

Fox 8 - classic Foxy. Intercepting, protecting the back four, showing composure, passing the ball simply and excellently - really really good.
Sarcevic 5 - still excellent in terms of energy and winning the ball back, but had a stinker with the ball - very wasteful. Still, he's a key player on his day and will come again, for sure.
Ness 7 - was absolutely pivotal to how well we started the match. Not only in ball winning, but playing sharp, crisp passes quickly to get our attacks going. Faded a little late on, but he's earned his place back - best performance since the opening day for me. Well played.

Carey 6 - yet another assist, and some great first time balls into Sarcs/Ladapo. A little wasteful but not bad at all.
J.Grant 7 - strong. Some lovely flicks, good passing in the final third, worked hard and deserves to keep his place.
Ladapo 8 - wow. What a turnaround. Quite simply he has gone from looking like the second coming of Nick Chadwick back in August to being like prime Reuben Reid. His link up play was excellent - dropping into space, holding off defenders and laying the ball off superbly. And how good were those two goals. Looked knackered after an hour and probably should have been taken off earlier, but with no out and out striker on the bench can understand why he wasn't.

Lameiras 9 - the only sub on long enough to deserve a rating, and quite simply, took the p!ss.

DA really stuck his neck out with the changes he made, glad to see it paid off. Looked a totally different side. The desire to win the ball back was great to see, then being able to create numerous chances when we did have the ball.

Ness is a classy player when he fancies it, he was quality tonight.
