That's more like it!

It was easily the best performance of the season, 3-1 flattered Gillingham because we deserved to win by five or six.
The whole mindset of the team was totally different and light years ahead of that poor second half display against Oxford.
Each player chased, harried, closed down and tackled, typified by Ness and Fox. They played just in front of the back four and were instrumental in this new found belief, they blocked, tackled, passed and often just got a toe in to break up a Gillingham attack.

It was a bold move by Derek Adams to change three quarters of the back four and Peter Grant was unlucky to be dropped but the replacement centre-backs Songo'o and Canavan put dangerman Tom Eaves in their back pocket.
Conor Grant played as a makeshift left-back and his performance looked like he played his whole career in that position, he was also dangerous when taking our set-pieces, his delivery is excellent.
So credit to Adams for making the changes which paid off.

The football was neat passing into space or playing on the counter attack. The second goal was a thing of beauty, we were under pressure but several clever passes allowed Conor Grant space on the left and his perfect cross found Ladapo. The TV highlights probably won't show the whole move for that goal.

The build up to the game was just horrible, something needed to change so Adams made five changes, out went Peter Grant, Lameiras, Edwards (completely from the squad), Smith-Brown and O'Keefe and in came Songo'o, Canavan, the Grants - Joel and Conor - and Ness.

You could tell within the first 10 minutes that the players had a different mindset, Saturday's attacking performance was not too bad, it was the defence that had a nightmare but against Gillingham the players were determined not to let Gillingham get near Macey, highlighted by Fox and especially Ness closing down and flying into challenges. This set the tone for the rest of the match.

The new back four quickly settled down and had time to pass the ball along the defence, probing for an opening further forward - it's something we hadn't done much this season but regularly started play from the back four last season.

Carey, as ever, assisted for the first goal when he laid a ball inside to Ladapo, his shot found the roof of the net. So simple. 1-0.

We had to protect that lead, mindful of recent collapses after scoring so the players again closed down space and put pressure on Gillingham.
Once we got the ball we played through the midfield with long balls to Ladapo a rarity and played only when necessary.

Gillingham did have several free-kicks and corners and from one of these we scored our second goal!
We defended well, passed around and found Conor Grant clear on the left his inch perfect cross was deftly headed in by Ladapo. 2-0. Some strikers might have tried the bullet header but Ladapo very cleverly just glanced the ball in.
The weight of desperation suddenly lifted from the pitch and the stands, only a condescending club statement could spoil this night!

The players left the pitch to a very good reception at half time.

Carey picked up an injury just before half time but came out for the second half.

The game continued in the same way, although Gillingham had to push forward which left gaps at the back, chances fell for Carey and Joel Grant while Sarcevic had two great chances but on one he slowed down and the ball was cleared and the other he shot just wide when it looked easier to score.

At the other end Macey didn't have a lot to do except for collect a few crosses, which in this game he did with ease.

Carey limped off and was replaced by Lameiras and soon after scored our third. He played a long one-two with Ladapo and just squeezed the ball over the line. 3-0 and surely game safe!

Unfortunately Lameiras showed in a space of a few minutes why he is so good at attacking but a liability at the back because he gave away a needless free-kick and from it O'Neil scored with a deflected shot. 3-1.

We didn't crumble and played the same way and created more chances, scoring 4 goals would be the stuff of fantasy so we settled for 3 goals and 3 points that lifts us off the bottom of League One and within 2 points of safety.

Ness had a storming game and made a huge difference, along with Fox he dominated the midfield.
Sarcevic played further forward, almost in the number 10 role, and had an influence on the game before tiring.

Have we found a 20 goal a season striker? Ladapo is red hot at the moment and should have had a hat trick, he did tire late in the game and if he's ever injured we'd lack a cutting edge.

Conor Grant was a revelation at left-back, strong and tidy and should nail down that position, although his lack of pace might mean he would struggle against pacy wingers. Our fourth left-back this season.

Canavan and Songo'o were solid as our new centre-back partnership and kept Tom Eaves in check.

The performance was similar to the performances in the second half of last season, the key is to repeat the performance game by game. The only way to stop criticism of players and manager and patronising statements aimed at fans is to win games, so we should look forward to a peaceful few days in Argyle land. :)

Man of the match - Ness.

Macey 6, Moore 6, Songo'o 7, Canavan 7, C Grant 8, Fox 8, Ness 8, Sarcevic 7, Carey 7, J Grant 7, Ladapo 7. Subs Lameiras 7, O'Keefe 6, Jephcott n/a.
Great report and delighted we have finally put in a performance of note. Why do you do it to us Argyle? Just when it feels like we've fallen out of love and divorce is on the cards you get yourself all dolled up and the warm fuzzy feeling returns! That said, like many the awful PR from the club really rankles and my feeling remains that the man in charge is not who I want representing my club but credit due to him for his bold changes and digging out a win whilst under pressure and let's enjoy a well earned victory COYG.

Fantastic result and much needed.

The gulf in performances from other matches to yesterday’s is staggering.

Hopefully we’ve found ourselves (15 games in) and we can kick on.

Next match is mega important if any of the recent damage can be slowly repaired.

Last night was a real injection of hope

Good performance but let’s not get carried away - gillingham in the first half were as bad as we were at Oxford in the second half -just kept giving us back the ball. Let’s see if this new line up is the real deal over the coming weeks.

I thought it was at least as much that Argyle were dominating the ball and winning it back quickly, rather than sitting off and letting Gillingham attack us. Gills were no great shakes but they have a player for in Eaves - he never wastes the ball in possession - and we did well to largely shut the supply to him down.

Concur with all those who say it was an excellent performance, with Ness the stand out performer for me. First half we looked like a proper football team, in the best sense of the phrase. Ladapo running into form is a blessing.

The issue is how do we with those players sometimes look so awful.Must be down to the tactics and negative set up usually employed.[/quote

OMG! Give it a rest! Even Sam Jones isn't moaning tonight!

It's a point for debate. Is that beyond you?

Read your post to be rhetorical!
Don't need to debate playing different players in different positions with different attitudes, it's all part of team sport. I'd rather just enjoy the performance, the 3 points, hope that we can continue this form and give credit where credit's due!

Who could have seen that coming, I don’t buy Gillingham are a poor team,Argyle were that much better, you could see from the off the determination in the players faces they wanted it, hopefully the can show the determination and effort for the remaining season.
Maybe those of us who criticised this team are going to eat humble pie I hope so.

I read someone saying Lameiras is a bit of a liability because of an error that led to their goal. I'd be careful saying this, he is one of the most threatening offensive players on our books, so don't deflate the lad. He can win games in an instant, that's the important thing he brings to the fore, an he should always start games in my opinion but the manager often has him collecting splinters on the bench. That aside, he got the team selection spot on, so let's just enjoy the moment, an excellent and much needed win and boost. Before we ready ourselves for two tough assignments v Scunthorpe away, then home to Sunderland. In top gear we can win both, there's no doubt about it. Drop off from that intensity we are capable of losing both.

best performance of the season, a little shout out to our keeper who caught every ball against an Ariel threat. i'm not a fan of Macey at all but he was extremely confident in everything he did.

Every player played for their manager. refreshing to see. Sarcevic adds a new dimension to the team, he is always looking forward.

MOM- Songo'o- excellent game and was a warrior. won EVERY header and with his new ball playing ability he could make that position his own.

Have to disagree....

Connor Grant first game at left back needed some defensive help from the player in front of him. Joel Grant will track back more than Reuben. The fact that Carey got pulled (when having one of his best games this season for us) rather than J.Grant to make way for Reuben shows Adams wanted / needed that defensive stability. I'd be surprised if we see Carey and Reuben starting together in the next few games at least...

All in all though, spot on! If Sarcevic gets that extra 10% match sharpness back over the next few games (not a criticism as thought he was immense tonight) and the midfield 3 all stay fit a climb up the table is inevitable

According to the official Twitter, Carey took a knock and came off because he was looking uncomfortable.

Fair enough hadn't seen that.... Original point still stands as to why I think he didn't start the game...

Macey 7
Solid all game, I do think he made a meal out of their goal though

Moore 5
Needs to play it quicker, I personally wouldn't be upset if we saw him hit row z a few times to gain some sort of confidence

Songo'o 8
How many more times can I change my mind about him...essentially I value him, was a beast

Canavan 6
Not strong enough and wrestles too much, I'm a grant fan.

C. Grant 7
Very decent performance, showed a little discipline and class

Fox 7
Good solid showing, did the grubby stuff and was a little more like the guy we've admired for a couple years when looking forward

Ness 9
Best I've seen him, he was everywhere, excellent breaking things up and escorting the ball forward

Sarcevic 8
Immense energy (that eventually ran out) lung bursting sprints, covered so so much ground that he was excused for his touch disappearing in the last 30. Captain material.

Carey 7
Was a pest and at times had Gillingham fearful...a decent contribution to the game without being back to his best

J. Grant 7
Worked hard to keep pressure on from his side of the pitch, not a day where he took it to defenders but cute little passes brought Freddie in to play well

Freddie 9
Dropping deeper, played the Taylor role well and has admirable confidence...his first was similar to his first on Saturday in as much as little backlift and getting the ball hit... A natural sort of quality... Lovely to watch.

He took a blow just before half-time and crumpled to the ground. Needed physio at the time.
