Forest Green Vegans 0 - 1 Ginsters Meat Pilgrims.

Superb! The complete team performance.

The first half was about attacking and getting the goal, the second was about resolute defending with the make shift back five holding firm to keep a clean sheet.

Wootton won every header, Josh Grant won every tackle and Palmer made the saves late in the game to spark fantastic celebrations between the fans and players at the final whistle.

We needed a win like this to kick start our season, especially after the defeat against Exeter and it doesn't feel this type of result is a one-off because the players looked so determined and focused typified by substitute Joe Riley who made a crunching tackle that left him injured.

We shaded the first half having done our homework in stopping FGR from playing, we pressed and harried and also created chances.
The winning goal was a short corner by Mayor to Sarcevic who ran along the edge of the penalty area who shot over the keeper with what looked like a slight deflection.
Are footballs still made of leather? If so - the perfect irony.

Sarcevic ran the game during the first half.

McFadzean picked up an injury just before half time and was replaced by Riley for the second half with Edwards switching to the left.

We sat back and repelled attack after attack and in truth we rode our luck at times with shots whistling past Palmer's posts.

Riley was then injured so Moore became our third RWB of the game and Telford came on up front.

Moore had a chance with a flicked header that flew wide and Canavan should have done better with a free header but normal service was FGR laying siege on our goal.

The back five and Palmer were fantastic with Grant mopping up in front of them, he's now found his best position.

Six minutes of injury time seemed like an eternity especially with FGR winning corner after corner.
We held out for a fantastic win.

One criticism is you just wish Danny Mayor would be more involved but hey ho.

Edwards didn't look out of place at LWB when Cooper seemed the obvious option when McFadzean went off.

The ref was very whistle happy which meant most of the game was stop-stop.

We showed a lot of gamesmanship late in the game, nowhere near Wycombe's standards but it's obvious and a sign we can close out games, something that Lowe has previously criticised the players for.

It's difficult to pick a Man of the Match, a lucky dip for Sarcevic, Wootton, Palmer or Josh Grant.

Palmer 8, Wootton 8, Canavan 7, Sawyer 7, Josh Grant 8, Edwards 7, Sarcevic 8, Mayor 6, McFadzean 6, Joel Grant 7, B Moore 7. Subs Telford 7, Taylor 7, Riley 7.

Thanks as always for a detailed report.

Few observations from someone who wasn't there today.

Josh Grant- can he maintain consistency in new role?

Only 5 points now between FGR in 2nd and us in 11th. Chance to close gap when Bradford visit next week

George Cooper- after his short run in a starting berth, he now seems banished to the bench - will he be retained after January or will we return him and use budget elsewhere? Personally prefer him further up the pitch than at wing back but not sure he will get many chances there.

Anyway great result today. :scarf:

Josh Grant has done well as a central defensive midfielder in the last two away games so credit to him for turning it around after a shambles of a performance against Exeter as a centre-back.
Can he play as a CDM in a home game where the player in that position has to get the team moving forward with good passing?
It will be interesting to see if gets selected for the Bradford game, which he surely will, and if can play as a creator rather than a destroyer.

The referee warrants discussion. First half he seemed to buy every dive by FGR and wave play on for blatant fouls and shoves on Argyle players. It was infuriating at times.

From watching it on iFollow so please forgive the lateness of the hour comments [2300 hours kick-off here].

A deserved win although we rode our luck a little at the end.

FGR - how the hell are they top ?

On that showing, they were toothless and easily bullied.

Our centre backs were outstanding, Josh Grant a star but the guys up top were very disappointing - being starved of quality service.

Agree with MGM - we are not the finished article - a little disjointed in places and yet to find a REAL attacking format consistently.

IF FGR are a measure of League 2 champion contenders then lets take a look at Bradford next week ?

Keep the Faith :scarf:

I thought the iFollow coverage was superb.

Just the commentary was a second or two ahead of the action which spoilt it a little - until I ignored it !

FGR are near the top because they have an excellent defence and play good football. It does an injustice to us to say they didnt look any good. Defensively we have been very solid for several weeks now with one ..er ...abheration.
Some people e.g. mgm have totally unrealistic expectations as well as reading so much into a performance against top of the table side . Yes we were under pressure at times and didnt look too pretty. This is the 4th tier for goodness sake not La Liga. You have to grind out results esp away from home against in form teams. Even Sturrocks record breakers often played that way. Anybody wanting silky Barcelona type football should watch er.. Barcelona!
I do think we need to make more use of our set pieces though. The delivery is often poor with nobody looking like getting on the end of them. Goal came when we tried something different.

And yet their manager felt he was against them and should have had 2 pens.!Objectivity is difficult isn't it.?

Manager/Coach who has lost ?

Should have had this !

Should have had that ?

It is a well documented script for the media and the fans - too often !

Referee was NOT good, mainly inconsistent in my book AND I try to judge these guys objectively [being an ex-man in the middle myself, not far from the level where FGR originated ?]

Mark Cooper has more of a problem getting his team to be less intimidated than bleating about penalties NOT been given.

I think he is whistling in the dark !!

Keep the Faith :scarf:

Good result, uninspiring performance.

I personally thought the sheer determination shown by every single player was inspiring.

We created very little. This attacking, dynamic football we were promised is still very much a rarity and okay, to be fair today we were away to the top team, but we need to do a lot more if we're going to finish in the top 7.

Is that the best that you can come up with?

We have just beaten, on their manor, the team sitting in the no. 1 spot. It’s only the second time that they have been beaten at home.

We also came away with a clean sheet thanks to a defence that pulled out all the stops.

If you find difficulty in finding that result something to celebrate, methinks you are following the wrong team.

Sounds like the players showed a bit of fight and desire, that is what is needed in this league, it’s not always going to be pretty, we’re in the 4th division. Sarcevic fast becoming the first name on the team sheet this season. A real fans favourite. Hopefully the way the players embarrassed themselves at Exeter will prove to be the Turing point for us.

Few thoughts:
It was encouraging to see we can mix it up a little & play a little more directly when it's needed.
Today was always going to be difficult, their 2 CBs were absolute units, particularly Rawson - he'd be better suited to WWE !

Superb fight at the end to keep them out, Kudos to Wootton & Palmer, thought they were top class.

Strange atmosphere, felt like a non-league friendly at times.
Lovely little place, but it's really not sustainable for long term league football.
The whole village was one gridlocked mess for nearly an hour after the final whistle.

Apparently they turned up at Bletchley not Exeter!

We held our wedding reception at "The Turning Point" in West Drayton many years ago !

Got divorced 8 years later.

So make out of that what you want re. Argyle's future ?

BTW, I am still on super-friendly terms with my ex-wife, who is remarried !!

Quality wise it was a poor game.

We barely created any decent chances and couldn’t keep possession for more that two passes, before giving the ball away ,and their keeper was never tested 2nd half.

They were not much better ,but did retain possession of the ball a bit better but most of their their attacking ploy was lumping balls into the channels behind our defence, which our defence easily cleared.

At least we never looked like conceding towards the end of the game .

Forest Green never looked like a quality side, which explains why this league is so wide open, still
