Back to square one, consistently inconsistent.

Camara didn't deserve to lose that game, he gave everything.

After the game Lowe had an exchange of views with a fan pitchside on the Lyndhurst side, I didn't know what was said but it didn't look friendly and bizarre for Lowe to walk over to that area.

It was a battle of wills, the first half was enjoyable and almost a game of chess with Oxford pressing us and stopping our defence from passing around and forcing us to go long knowing that the Oxford centre backs would win the ball.
Our game plan was to beat the press and leave half of the Oxford team in our half which is exactly what happened for our first goal.
It was good work by Mayor and Hardie on the left, Hardie crossed and Camara fired into the roof of the net.

For another 15 minutes or so we looked a good team with the second goal surely not far away.
Unfortunately it was Oxford who scored the next goal and it was a soft goal to concede. We didn't deal with a set-piece and suddenly it was 1-1.

Oxford were now the better team and nearly scored a second goal.

For five minutes of the second half we looked good again but we didn't have a hold in midfield and we struggled to contain the Oxford runners.
From one of these runs right through our midfield came the Oxford second goal.
It was too easy.

Edwards then cleared off the line.

The Oxford centre-backs were the two best players on the pitch and easily dealt with our attacks.

Aimson stupidly gave away a penalty when there was no need to make the tackle and it's 3-1 and supposedly fortress Home Park is looking like a wet sand castle.

We did manage to get around the Oxford defence and substitution Byron Moore was brought down and the Hux gave another penalty, our first of the season.
Who would take it? Up stepped Jephcott for what seemed like his only touch of the ball in the second half to thump it in the roof of the net. 2-3.

We had some late pressure but with a free-kick and a corner why was Fornah taking these? They were both poor efforts just as we looked for an equaliser. Someone like Mayor should have took responsibility for those two late set-pieces. Is Grant and George Cooper the only two players able to take set-pieces?

We played like an away team which is a shame because for the first 20 minutes or so we were so good.

Camara had a storming game, especially in the first half and is on course to be player of the season.

Hardie did well with his runs but struggled with high balls against the Oxford centre-backs.

Mayor was in and out of the game, much like the team he's inconsistent.
Macleod is neat and tidy but isn't strong enough.

The whole team has a soft underbelly, we are too nice to play against and it shows because we haven't come from behind to win a game this season.

Nouble lacked any effort when he came on, there's just no determination from him.
Jephcott was very quiet although he was well marshalled by the Oxford defenders.

We finished the game with 3 strikers and Mayor at wing-back.

You have to say Lowe was tactically outwitted.

Man of the match - Camara.

Cooper 6, Aimson 5, Canavan 5, Watts 6, Macleod 6, Edwards 6, Camara 8, Mayor 5, Grant 6, Jephcott 5, Hardie 6. Subs - Moore 7, Nouble 5, Fornah n/a, Telford n/a.

I watched the exchange between Lowe and a fan after the game. Totally unprofessional of him under these circumstances.

Anyway , regarding the game. Mystified as to why he took Grant off. He seems like the only player that is capable of playing in the lwb role.
And this is the problem , we donā€™t have the players to play the system that he wants to play. Our midfield canā€™t control a game and offer little protection to our error prone defenders.
We desperately need a leader.

Time to stick or twist in terms of tactics?

Dissapointing night really. First half we were..alright i suppose, not great but ok, you just knew Oxford were only going to get better. Second half i thoight we were awfull.
Feel for the front two, no service and just trying to chase down balls.
Without Camera, i just dont see any real fight or desire, thats even with him being in and out if the game. If he could stay on it for the whole match he would be great (still MOM imo).
At the back, we all know it is not good enough although i would say this is probably the best backline.
We need a real leader and better communication, on a few goal kicks the team were screaming what are we doing (a question i am sure we all thought a few times tonight) this shows a lack of plan and communication.
Talking of game plan, i just didnt see what ours was tonight. Subs were made too early imo and were not needed at the time, we were still in the game, the changes made didnt give or provide us with 'more'.
Mayor - just not seeing it at the moment, a couple runs, the same play on the edge of the box, taking too long to shoot, going central to goal then shooting straight against the defender. Not doing enough for me im afraid.

I don't recall our front two winning a header when the ball was hot long to them all night. They were out jumped quite easily by the Oxford defence. Our solution to this problem? Hit even more high and long balls to them.

A number of these players just simply aren't good enough to compete at this level. Not sure what a new manager would bring.

Important January window coming up. Hopefully Lowe can bring in the necessary quality we desperately need.

If we can bring in a couple competent and experienced centre backs in January weā€™ll be fine and I doubt even worrying about relegation come April/May.

If we donā€™t then weā€™re going to be sweating big time.

Thereā€™s easily four worse teams than us in this division. Probably double that. Our defence is so shambolic though that we could go down despite having a generally decent midfield and one of the highest scorers in the division.

Lowe neglected the glaring defensive problems in summer 2019 and got away with it due to rubbish league 2 strikers and mainly Alex Palmer.

He barely strengthened the summer just gone and itā€™s costing us big time. His future and reputation potentially hang on him fixing it this window.

I personally think most of the pieces are there, I even think the quality is there, what's missing is a leader, I think that's very obvious.

Sir Alex once told me that you have to win the physical battle, only then do you get to play your football. We lost the physical battle every time to a big strong physical side but we rolled over and asked for our bellies to be tickled like my new puppy.

A big mistake subbing Grant, a big mistake picking the wrong team, and a big mistake engaging in an arm waving confrontation with a fan at the final whistle when emotions were running high. That is 7 defeats in 9 and unfortunately Lowe was done by Karl's far superior tactics. Anyone can see how to beat us at the moment and we are shipping goals at an alarming rate.

As so often, after 30 minutes you're thinking this should be a comfortable win. The fact that games change so radically can only mean we are being sussed out and not responding ourselves. When it goes well it goes well, but there has never been a plan B under this manager.

Donā€™t understand the criticism of Mayor. Take him out and we have nothing creatively.

Donā€™t understand why Grant was taken off.

Hardie and Jephcott couldnā€™t hold anything up - they simply want to get the ball in front. I guess that's why Nouble came on but he barely won anything either.

Aerially they were superior everywhere.

Physically they were superior everywhere.

Afraid to say I still donā€™t think Cooper is ready. Very flaky tonight.

Grant may be be carrying an injury. My worry is once he went off it was a lottery who took the corners and free-kicks and the two we had late in the game were wasted by Fornah.
Hardie is suddenly a free-kick specialist but he was off the pitch as well.

Strangely at half time (twice now) the goal posts we are kicking towards are cleaned or greased but not the other goal.

Their big central defenders showed exactly what we need in the centre of our defence. As you say, they won every header and yet we continued to pump high balls forward. Hardie and Jephcott are not being used to their strengths. Hardie needs to receive passes to run onto and outpace these defenders, while Jephcott needs the ball to his feet. Hardie received one such pass and he provided a perfect assist for Camara. Neither will win anything in the air against big dominating defenders. There are plenty around because most League 1 teams seem to have got them but we donā€™t seem to be looking for them.

It was a disappointing result after having run the game for the first 35 minutes. If, in my view, teams push onto your back three then you need an outlet with the holding/defensive midfielders to drop and pick up the ball. McCloud looks a decent player but he didnā€™t give us that option tonight, hence the long balls which we going to lose all night long. Fornah is a much better option in that position for me. He has a great ability to drop a shoulder and create time and space before distributing the ball.
Not sure Hardie should have come off. Once or twice balls down the channel did give us a few openings as he outpaced their defenders but we need the attacking midfield players to get forward and support just as Camara did for the first goal.

We had Bakinson last year- unfortunately McCleod and Fornah are nowhere near the same standard.

Does our system mean that we have to have ball playing centre-backs instead of proper no nonsense defenders like the two Oxford centre-backs?

I don't know the stats but I reckon in most games our centre-backs have the most touches of the ball as they pass it around.
