Mole, which players do you think Argyle should seriously look at signing? IMO we need an attacking midfielder

Ashley Parillon, 23 year old - Ex Manchester United and Preston youth.

“Ashley Parillon has got 10 goals already this season and it’s not even Christmas yet,” said Clitheroe manager Carl Garner.

“He’s a massive player for us.

“When his head is clear, and he’s right, Ashley is the best player at this level.

I can’t think of any other player at this level who could score 20 goals plus for Clitheroe from midfield.

“That’s what he gives us. In the final third of the pitch he is just awesome.

“What he brings to us is priceless – he gets in the box at the right time and creates chances.

“The boy could definitely play higher.”

OK, I take the point about players playing in non-league football that have ended up making it. I maintain that statistically there are far far more that never make it than do come good but there you go.

There is one line in that quote that stands out which is 'when his head is clear.....' From that it is safe to assume it isn't always clear and that maybe the kind of problem why he was released by 2 league clubs before. Every player released is released for a reason. It may not just be their talent or ability. It may not be a bad reason (financial reasons at a club maybe).

I just wonder why players that were previous 'noticed' and signed on, then later released, remain in the non-leagues for so long when they are supposedly good enough to play higher. Take Ryan Rowe - 50 odd goals last year yet no one took a punt in the summer - not one club in the 6 tiers higher Stourbridge where willing to give him a shot. There must be a reason for that and I'm not claiming to know it.

If you're looking for attacking midfielders or wingers to come in and do an immediate job then i would suggest:

Luke Williams, right/left winger, Hayes & Yeading.
Ashley Parillon, central midfielder, Clitheroe.
Tony Stokes, central midfielder (or striker), Concord Rangers.
Dayle Grubb*, central midfielder, Weston-super-Mare.

*Not been mentioned in this thread yet, but he is a very talented, creative player with an eye for goal.

As for goalscorers:

Wes York, striker (or left/right winger), Nuneaton Town.
Connor Jennings, striker, Stalybridge Celtic.
Jason Prior, striker, Bognor Regis Town.
Ross Allen, striker, Guernsey.

That said every single player i have mentioned in this thread has the potential to play in the football league, i wouldn't have mentioned them if i didn't think they would have been of any use.

I know from experience that a lot of football league clubs scouting networks are inadequate and a lot of players slip through the net because of that, and also some managers just aren't willing to look at players lower down and are afraid to take a chance.

Listen to what former Rochdale boss Keith Hill said after signing Craig Dawson (current Eng U21 int CB - 6 caps, 4 goals) from non-league Radcliffe Borough: “People aren’t willing to take gambles. Chief scouts will not pin their name to a player. Too many jobs are at risk and they will not say, ‘Yes, go and get him.’ We don’t mind taking a gamble with players as long as they’re hungry."

Peterborough were mentioned earlier, this is what Darren Ferguson said recently: “It’s a fact that we are prepared to gamble on players with potential while other clubs don’t seem willing to take that risk. “It’s certainly worked out well for us. There are players that don’t make it, but as they haven’t cost us much it’s not that big a deal because the ones that do come off increase their value while delivering success to the club."

As for Ashley Parillon he is the captain of Clitheroe so his attitude and mind can't be that bad. ;)

I think Bas Savage has just been released.

Seriously if i hear Bas Savage's name mentioned again i think my head will explode - NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, Terrible player. Every single striker i have mentioned is better than Bas 'not very' Savage.

Please chaps, for my sanity, no more Savage suggestions!

I'd say Robbie was probably on a par with Lily now to be fair, although the Afghan hound in oversized boots is a better dancer!

(only joking - Sav was an effective player in his day)

Glynn Hobbs!

A good player with football league ability. I know for a fact teams have had him watched over the past few years at both Plymouth Parkway and Tavistock. Big, strong, quick and a good finisher. Even Man Utd were said to be interested a few years back, according to the local press anyway.
